WAYS TO GET INVOLVED
There is more than one way to help.
-
Assistant coaches support our coaches at training sessions, games and camps.
This role may involve helping with drills, encouraging players, supporting small groups, helping younger players stay engaged, assisting with equipment and learning more about how sessions are planned and delivered.
Assistant coaching may suit parents, older players, former players, students, aspiring coaches or anyone who wants to help young people develop through basketball.
You do not need to be fully qualified to start helping in a supported role. We can talk through what is appropriate and help signpost people towards Basketball England coaching courses and development opportunities where relevant.
-
We want to help young people develop as leaders, not just players.
Young leaders may support junior sessions, help with equipment, assist coaches, encourage younger players and begin learning how sessions are delivered.
This can be a great first step for older junior players, Academy students or young people interested in sport, coaching, teaching, leadership or community work.
Under-18 volunteers will always be supported and supervised appropriately.
-
Basketball needs more referees at every level of the game.
Referees are vital to giving players regular, well-organised and enjoyable competition. Without referees, games cannot happen; and across the sport, clubs and leagues need more people willing to learn, develop and support the game.
You do not need to be an experienced referee to start. This role may suit older players, former players, parents, students, coaches or anyone who wants to understand the game better and support basketball locally.
We can help signpost interested volunteers towards Basketball England officiating courses and suitable development opportunities. New referees can build confidence gradually through junior games, local league opportunities and supportive environments.
-
Basketball games also need trained table officials to run properly.
Table officials support the game from courtside, helping with the scoresheet, scoreboard, game clock, shot clock and communication with referees.
It is a brilliant way to understand the game more deeply, support teams on game day and become part of the matchday crew without needing to be on court.
No experience is needed to start, we can help people learn and signpost volunteers towards Basketball England table official courses where appropriate.
-
Fixtures run better when each team has people willing to help.
Game day support might include welcoming visiting teams, setting up equipment, assisting with music, helping with refreshments or making sure players and parents know where they need to be.
This is a great role for parents or supporters who want to help without committing to coaching or officiating.
-
The club runs events throughout the year, including awards evenings, club trips, camps, fundraisers and social events.
Volunteers can help with planning, ticketing, setup, raffles, fundraising ideas, event support and making sure club events feel organised and welcoming.
These roles are ideal for people who enjoy organisation, hospitality, fundraising, creativity or simply being part of club life.
-
Photos, videos and social media help us celebrate players, share club news and promote basketball locally.
We are interested in support from people who can help with photography, video, matchday content, graphics, write-ups, interviews, social media or archive material.
All media and photography activity must follow club safeguarding, consent and photography guidance.
-
Behind every club is a lot of organisation.
Committee and admin support can include helping with communication, policies, finance, events, records, sponsorship, fundraising, membership, equipment, planning or wider club development.
Some roles are formal committee roles, while others are informal support roles. If you have useful skills but are not sure where they fit, please speak to us.
SAFEGUARDING, TRAINING & SUPPORT
Your safety and the safety of our players is always our priority. Some roles require checks, training or approval before starting.
We will help guide you through what is needed and support you every step of the way. This may include:
Basketball England membership
Safeguarding training
DBS checks
Role-specific training
Mentoring and support
Club policies & guidance
We can help you obtain Safeguarding training and DBS checks. Our Club Welfare Officer is a DBS verifier which helps us speed this process along.
