INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Our individual awards recognise players across each team and age group.

Some awards are based on measurable performance, such as scoring or three-point shooting. Others recognise qualities that cannot always be captured by statistics: improvement, defensive commitment, team respect, attitude, effort, game understanding and all-round impact.

These awards help celebrate the different ways players contribute to their team and develop across the season.

LEADING SCORER AWARD

The Leading Scorer Award recognises the player who led their team in scoring across the season.

This award is based on points per game in official league fixtures. To qualify, players must have played in at least 50% of their team’s completed league games, rounded up to the nearest whole game.

Basketball is a team game, but players who can consistently put points on the board make a major impact. This award celebrates scoring contribution, consistency and the ability to create or finish chances across a meaningful part of the season.

SHARPSHOOTER AWARD

The Sharpshooter Award recognises the player who made the most three-pointers for their team in league play across the season.

Introduced in 2025/26, this award is based on total three-pointers made, rather than an average. It celebrates players who can stretch the floor, punish defensive mistakes and change the momentum of games from beyond the arc.

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

The Most Improved Player Award recognises growth. It is not simply about who started the season with the least experience, or who finished with the best statistics. It celebrates players who have made clear progress through effort, coachability, confidence, skill development and a better understanding of the game.

Most Improved winners are players whose development has been noticed by coaches, teammates and the wider club.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

The Rookie of the Year Award recognises a first-year senior player who has made an immediate impact with the Men’s team.

It is designed for players who are new to senior basketball, or stepping up from the junior pathway, and who have shown talent, commitment, confidence and a willingness to learn.

SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR

The Sixth Man of the Year Award recognises players who embrace their role and make a real impact from the bench.

This award is presented from U16 upwards, where teams usually begin to have more defined starting groups and rotations.

Being a Sixth Man means being ready when called upon, bringing energy, focus and contribution without needing to start every game. This award celebrates players who make their team stronger through attitude, readiness and performance in their role.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The Defensive Player of the Year Award is presented to players in our Performance Teams who set the tone without always taking the spotlight.

This award celebrates defensive effort, discipline, intensity and responsibility. It may recognise players who take on difficult matchups, rebound, block shots, create steals, communicate well, or consistently make life difficult for opponents.

A Defensive Player of the Year winner shows that effort, toughness and commitment on defence can be just as valuable as scoring.

PLAYERS’ PLAYER

The Players’ Player Award is one of the most meaningful awards given by the club because it is voted for by the players themselves.

It recognises the teammate who has earned the respect of the group, not only through ability, but through attitude, commitment, support for others and the way they carry themselves throughout the season. A Players’ Player winner is someone their teammates trust, value and want to play alongside.

ACE AWARD

ACE stands for Attitude, Concentration and Effort. This is one of the club’s most important individual team awards because it recognises the standards we ask players to bring every time they step on court.

The ACE Award is not simply about being the most talented player. It recognises players who listen, stay focused, respond positively to coaching, work hard for the team and show consistency in training and games. ACE winners set the tone for others. They bring the right mindset, give their best effort and help create the kind of team environment we want at Great Yarmouth Basketball Club.

BEAST AWARD

The BEAST Award is the club’s most prestigious individual team award.

BEAST represents the wider qualities we aim to develop in our players: Behaviour, Excellence, Athleticism, Skill and Tactical Awareness.

This award is our version of a Most Valuable Player award, but it goes deeper than statistics. It recognises a player who has made an outstanding all-round contribution to their team through performance, understanding of the game, leadership, consistency, standards and the way they represent the club.

A BEAST Award winner is someone who impacts games, raises standards and reflects what we want a Great Yarmouth Basketball Club player to become.

SPECIAL ANNUAL AWARDS

Our Special Annual Awards recognise contribution across the whole club.

These awards honour coaches, volunteers, players and club members whose impact goes beyond a single team or statistic. They celebrate leadership, service, commitment, care for others and lasting contribution to Great Yarmouth Basketball Club.

Several of these awards are named after people who have played an important part in the story of basketball in Great Yarmouth, helping preserve the club’s history while recognising those who continue to move it forward.

COACH OF THE YEAR

The Coach of the Year Award recognises the club coach judged to have had the most outstanding season. Coaching is about far more than organising drills or managing games. A great coach builds confidence, sets standards, develops players, creates team culture and helps young people enjoy the game while continuing to improve.

This award recognises a coach who has gone above and beyond for their players and team; through commitment, leadership, care, preparation and the positive impact they have made across the season.

HEATHER MIDDLETON SHIELD - VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Heather Middleton was part of the committee that relaunched Great Yarmouth Basketball Club in 2014 and served as the new club’s first treasurer. A former player under Jim West and a well-respected Level 2 referee in Norfolk, Heather played an important role in helping the modern club establish itself.

The Heather Middleton Shield recognises outstanding volunteer contribution to the club, celebrating those who give their time, energy and care behind the scenes to support players, teams, events and the wider club community.

JOHN MANN SHIELD - PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Named in honour of John Mann, one of the key figures in the story of basketball in Great Yarmouth and Norfolk, this award recognises outstanding player contribution across the whole club.

The John Mann Shield is not simply about points, trophies or one standout performance. It recognises a player whose season reflects commitment, consistency, attitude, improvement, impact and the way they represent the club.

A John Mann Shield winner represents the best of the club’s playing pathway and the wider basketball tradition in Great Yarmouth.

JIM WEST TROPHY - CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR

The Jim West Trophy is awarded to the club member who has made a special contribution to Great Yarmouth Basketball Club throughout the season.

Named in honour of Jim West, a hugely significant figure in the history of basketball in Great Yarmouth, this award recognises contribution beyond one team, one game or one role.

The winner is someone who represents the values of the club: commitment, support for others, reliability, effort, care for the wider basketball community, and a willingness to give something back.

The Jim West Trophy celebrates the people who help make the club stronger, not always through headlines or statistics, but through the way they contribute, support and represent Great Yarmouth Basketball Club.
